Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate (GFE)
Under federal law, health care providers must give a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) to patients who don’t have insurance or who choose not to use insurance. This estimate outlines the expected costs of non-emergency medical services.
What You Need to Know:
-
The GFE shows the estimated cost of items and services reasonably expected for your care.
-
You have the right to receive a GFE for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services.
-
The GFE does not include unexpected costs that may arise due to complications or unforeseen circumstances.
-
You are not required to pay anything upon receiving a GFE — it is for your awareness only.
When Will You Receive a GFE?
Healthcare providers must provide a GFE within the following timeframes:
-
If your appointment is scheduled at least 10 business days in advance:
You will receive a GFE within 3 business days of scheduling. -
If your appointment is scheduled at least 3 business days in advance:
You will receive a GFE within 1 business day of scheduling. -
If you request a GFE without scheduling an appointment:
You will receive it within 3 business days of your request.
If your appointment is rescheduled, you will receive an updated GFE within the same timeframes listed above.
Dispute Rights:
If you receive a bill that is $400 or more above your GFE, you have the right to dispute the charge.
For more information about your rights or to start the dispute process, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
We recommend saving a copy or taking a photo of your GFE for your records.
